Guide to Studying Abroad in South Korea: Applying for your ARC

Updated: Jul 7, 2023

Once you arrive in South Korea on your, you need to immediately start registering for your ARC (Alien Registration Card), which is needed for long-term residents (any one who is not on a regular tourist visa). You can do this one of two ways: making an appointment at the local immigration office or seeing if your university has a group registration application. I did the latter option when I arrived in South Korea.

I arrived in South Korea at the beginning of August 2021 because I had to complete a 2-week quarantine. I got out of quarantine at the end of August. I got an email from Yonsei University (where I studied) about a group application for our ARC. The application deadline was in the beginning of September, and was done mostly online, which if you apply through the immigration office you will have to do it all in-person. The only things I had to do in-person was go to Yonsei University to do my fingerprinting and pick up the card from the Office of International Affairs.

Here are the basic differences between group registration and individual registration for your ARC:

If you decide to do a group application through your university (if they offer it), you will need various documents for it such as:

  • Passport photo

  • Passport copy

  • Copy of visa

  • Certificate of enrollment

  • Proof of residence (i.e. confirmation of dormitory residence, lease agreement or contract, etc.)
